Taking Back the Night
As you may know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and our team has appreciated the opportunity to get involved in various efforts to raise awareness about the cycle of domestic violence.
Over the last few weeks, I was able to represent Marsy's Law for Wisconsin at a couple recent Take Back the Night Events; Take Back the Night is an annual event that provides participants with the opportunity to take a stand against sexual & domestic violence in local communities.
The first was the Fox River Valley Take Back the Night in Oshkosh. It was a great event where people gathered in support of survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse. At this year's event, we got to hear about the efforts of victim services organizations in Winnebago County and march in support of victims of crime. It was awe-inspiring to see so many supporters turn out for this fantastic event, even if it was a little rainy!
Last week, I was able to participate in another great Take Back the Night event in Green Lake County. This event was hosted by Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services which is the local victim service organization for Green Lake County. Supporters came out for this great event and we heard from a survivor of domestic abuse from Green Lake County. She spoke about her story of abuse and with the help of Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services she is in a better place in her life.
We also remembered the 61 individuals that have died so far this year in Wisconsin from domestic abuse. It was a very moving experience listening to survivors share their stories. It was also a reminder that supporters can help build awareness of domestic abuse in their local communities so that we can end the cycle of violence. Thank you to Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services for inviting me to this great event and for all the work you do in your community.
The Marsy's Law for Wisconsin team is honored to be able to participate in so many great events with the outstanding organizations around Wisconsin that assist victims of crime in communities every day. Thanks to all those that came out in support of this important cause!
